Palace
JFK and Jackie attended a dinner hosted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace. After the evening’s festivities, JFK headed to airport alone (Jackie was staying for a week’s vacation with her sister Lee) and boarded Air Force One still in his dinner jacket.
Once aboard, Kennedy stripped down to his underwear and called journalist Hugh Sidey into the president’s quarters. The scene was described by another biographer.
Sidey noticed that the President looked haggard as he hugged his bare legs and “shifted stiffly in his seat…. He remembered little things like what {Krushchev’s] hands looked like.” Trying to be upbeat, Kennedy insisted the trip was “invaluable,” the future grim but not hopeless.
