JFK was interviewed by Walter Cronkhite in Hyannis, Massachusetts. The interview was on the first ever half-hour news broadcast by CBS. Cronkhite asked questions about the upcoming 1964 election, the nuclear test ban treaty, civil rights and Vietnam. In response to a question about whether the South Vietnamese government could win support of the public, Kennedy replied,
“With changes in policy, and perhaps in personnel, I think it can.”
Kennedy was being disingenuous as, at this time, his advisers were actively planning a military coup to overthrow the government.
An audio of the entire 20 minute interview can be heard here.
