JFK, his brother Ted Kennedy, their wives, and Caroline and John Jr. took a helicopter from Camp David to visit the Antietam Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland (also called the battle of Sharpsburg by the Confederacy), one of famous battles of the Civil War
Kennedy, whose love of history included gaining information about the Civil war, was also accompanied that day by Acting Park Superintendant Robert L. Lageman, Undersecretary of the Treasury James A. Reed, and Army official Ralph Horton.
