JFK was alone in the White House when Jackie decided to remain in Middleburg, Virginia to rest for the trip to Texas in a few days.
Kennedy invited Enud Sztanko to come to the White House to “just talk.” Sztanko later related that JFK “seemed a little low” and there was “some kind of urgency” in his voice.
Sztanko had known Kennedy for years and he told her in October, 1962 “I hope you are not a spy.” However, this evening, much to her later regret she was leery of being in the President’s company in the absence of his wife and she declined.
