JFK had stopped in Palm Beach on his way back to Washington, D.C. He stood talking with his father on the tarmac before boarding Air Force One for the trip back to Washington, D.C.

Shortly after takeoff, Joe Kennedy suffered a large stroke and was rushed to St. Mary’s hospital. A radio call went out to Air Force One, which turned back to Palm Beach.

JFK, carrying a hat, and Jackie dressed in a print dress went to the hospital accompanied by Robert Kennedy. When they left an hour later, aides noted that Jackie was visibly shaken and the Kennedy brothers seemed stunned.
