JFK participated in a meeting in the Oval Office that included NASA Administrator James Webb. The conversation, which was recorded, was quite lengthy and during it Kennedy told the group that this primary motivation in landing a man on the moon was to best the Soviet Union in the technology race and that “I’m not that interested in space.”
