JFK was in Washington, D.C. where he gave a news conference. He recommended reducing the war-emergency stockpiling program and chided the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York for looking for a federal bailout of the ailing New Haven railroad.
On the foreign affairs front he expressed satisfaction with the recommendations of the recent American foreign ministers conference held in Punta del Este, Uruguay on Cuba and described the current state of East-West relations as “very hazardous.”
Somewhat incongruously to this statement, attending the news conference as his guests were Mr. and Mme. Aleksie I. Adzubei, the daughter and son-in-law of Nikita Khruschev.
