JFK awoke at 7:30 am in Hyannis Port and called for his military aide to give him any updates on the status of the missing Dag Hammeraskjold. After being told that the UN official was still missing, Kennedy hurried back to DC on Air Force One.
The official word that the smoking wreckage had been located came over the Reuters wire while JFK was in the Oval Office. After being handed a torn piece of paper handed by Pierre Salinger, Kennedy studied it for a moment, shook his head, and wordlessly returned to his desk.
