JFK released a statement from the Democratic Party and also added a statement of his own regarding United State farm policy. The joint statement was signed by several governors of midwestern states, including Herschel Loveless of Iowa, George Docking of Kansas, Ralph Herseth of South Dakota, and Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin.
This statement and the one added by Kennedy was sharply critical of then Vice-President Richard Nixon for flip-flopping on his support for Agriculture Secretary Benson The statements pointed out that for years Nixon had supported Benson, but in the face of declining industry numbers, he now complained about his performance.
