JFK met with newly appointed ambassador to Vietnam Henry Cabot Lodge to brief him that the official position of the Kennedy administration was to defeat the Communist threat in Vietnam. Lodge was seen as particularly suited for the position as he had a sterling military record and was fluent in French.
