Sandbags
JFK traveled from London to Glasgow at the request of his father to meet with the American citizens who were in Scotland after their rescue from the German sinking of the Athenia. H also e was photographed, in suit and tie, helping locals fill sandbags, four days after the British declared war on Germany.
JFK returned to London that evening and reported to his father as reported in Joe, Sr’s diary.
“He came back with the very definite impresson that they are in a terrible state of nerves and that to put them on a ship going back to America for seven days without a convoy or some kind of protection would land them in New York in such a state that the publicity and criticism of the Government would be unbelievable”
