JFK and his crew of the PT 59 arrived in at the Navy base at Lambu Lambu Cove on Vella Lavella Island. That night Kennedy was sent with two other boats to the northwestern tip of Choiseul Island across the New Georgia Sound.

Their mission that night and on the following nights in October was to block the southern and western approaches to Choiseul Bay that were being used by Japanese barges laden with troops.
