JFK skippered PT-59 as part of an operation to help evacuate Marines who were trapped on the island of Choiseul. Kennedy picked up ten Marines (part of Lt. Col. Victor H. Krulak’s Second Marine Parachute Battalion) under the cover of darkness, some of whom were badly wounded. One marine who had been involved in the fierce fighting with the Japanese died in Jack’s bunk on the way back to base.
