Idling
JFK is paraphrased in the Mosquito Bites, a newsletter published for the PT community as saying the reason PT109 was unable to maneuver away from the Amagiri was his idling of a single engine. He apparently felt that if he had all engines in gear, he might have been able to gun the 109 out of the impact line.
