JFK is in the third day of taking four training PT boats from Melville to Jacksonville, Florida. He was attempting to pull one of the PT free which had inadvertently gone aground, when the PT boat that he was on at the time (PT101) also went aground, with the towline getting tangled in the propellers. JFK dove into the water to swim under the boat to untangle the lines.
