JFK was promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant (j.g.)
Overall, Kennedy was a respected sailor and naval officer and he would look back on his career with pride. However, this did not prevent him from having the same complaints as many who found naval life sometimes taxing, as he wrote in a letter to his friend Lem Billings.
Am out at this sea school in Chicago – sleeping eight in a room – and B.O. can be exceedingly dismal. This is certainly a different company I am working for now than before. The food is stinking – no fresh vegetables and the daily order of bologna is always pimento tinted
