Hurricane
JFK was in Hyannis Port when the worst hurricane to hit Cape Cod came ashore. Contemporary reports listed twenty-seven deaths and over $50 million in damage. The storm knocked down trees, telephone poles, and electrical lines.
Jack, who was on leave from Chelsea Naval Hospital, managed to get the family sailboat Victura to higher ground and drove his Buick convertible away from the beach and into Hyannis Port, where he was stranded by the rising waters.
