Cohasset was the first regular summer escape for the Joseph P. Kennedy family and it was not a happy one, at least not socially. The Irish Catholic Kennedys were not welcomed by the Protestant oldtimers in town and refused Joe Kennedy membership in the country club.
The Kennedys spent only two summers there (1922 and 1923) before giving up trying to enter Cohasset’s social scene and moving onto Cape Cod for their summer beach vacation.
