Nancy Tuckerman was a school girl friend of Jackie, having met as nine year olds at the Chapin School. After several years apart when Jackie was located to suburban Virginia after her mother’s marriage to Hugh Auchincloss, they were reunited at Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Connecticut.
Nancy was said to the be the closest of all of Jackie’s friend, who was notoriously difficult to become emotionally close with. As mutual friend Janet Felton Cooper recalled,
Nancy knew everything. She knew all of Jackie’s feelings. There wouldn’t have been anybody else but Nancy she would share that with.
The pair were known for hijinks at Farmington, mostly instigated by Jackie with Nancy a willing follower. Jackie had her horse boarded on campus and they would hitch up a wagon and sneak off with a radio and cigarettes to girltalk.
They remained in steady contact as they started their adult lives and Jackie was keen to get Nancy to leave her travel agent job in New York and hire on to help with the White House restoration, but she declined this initial job offer.
