Mark Dalton was a speechwriter for JFK and one of three main advisors who helped Kennedy win the special Democratic primary and then the 1946 general election in the Eleventh Congressional District.
Dalton recalled to a historian how he met Kennedy the day he announced his run for Congress:
At that point, I didn’t even know Jack Kennedy existed. I was very busy trying to find office space and start a law practice. I was sitting alone in my office when John Galvin called. I took a cab over to the Dowd Agency and met Jack and Red Fay. I was as thin as I could be at that time, but Jack was even thinner. He was actually like a skeleton, thin and drawn. He did not seem…. to be built for politics in the sense of being the easygoing, affable person. He was not much of an orator. He was shy but, deep down, aggressive. I went over the speech he had brought along. It was pretty much OK and I didn’t do much to it. That night he gave it on WNAC.
