48 Murray Road, Charleston, South Carolina was the first placed JFK lived upon his transfer to the Sixth Naval District Headquarters in January, 1942.

The house was owned by George Abbott Middleton and his wife. Mrs. Middleton recalled the following to an earlier biographer:

We had a big fifty-year old home with columns in a very nice section of town. There were six bedrooms. My son George was in the Navy; my daughters were married to men in the service and gone. There were a lot of naval officers pouring into Charleston so my husband and I decided to rent out four of the bedrooms to these officers. My husband, my mother, and I lived in the two bedrooms on the third floor. One of the officers brought Jack Kennedy by and he took the room right away. It had a good view overlooking the Ashly River.
