Duffy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Edward C. Duffy was a young Catholic priest serving at St. Xavier parish in Hyannis Port who was befriended by JFK. They met during the dedication service for the new main altar that commemorated the life and death of Joseph Kennedy, Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Duffy was a robust and athletic young man who had taken an undergraduate degree in Economics before doing six years of seminary training in Baltimore. He had been ordained at St. Mary&#8217;s cathedral in Fall River and sent to Hyannis Port for his initial \u00a0junior pastoral assignment. He quickly inserted himself into the town community as both a coach and participant in the town&#8217;s sports teams where he coached two youth basketball teams to championships and played ball in the local league.<\/p>\n<p>Upon meeting him, JFK invited him to go sailing. Duffy impressed the Kennedy&#8217;s and he was asked to compose the wording on a testimonial plaque for the church lobby and was returning invited to the Kennedy house on Friday nights to watch first-run movies with the family.<\/p>\n<p>Jack did not interact with Duffy on just a purely social level during their frequent sails on the &#8220;Victura&#8221;\u00a0across the sound. Kennedy took the time to read Duffy&#8217;s thesis on &#8220;Communist Techniques in America&#8221; and sometimes took confession with Duffy in the church rectory.<\/p>\n<p>[454, p. 91-3]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Edward C.
