Ed McLaughlin (affectionately called Eddie by his friends) was the son of a Boston fire commissioner. McLaughlin served in the Pacific as a member of PT squadron Ten and after his return to the States he was based in Boston while he finished up his military commitment in December, 1945.

Some historians feel that Ed McLaughlin was especially cultivated by Jack as he contemplated his run for Congress in 1946. Eddie had important local political connections that would be important to Kennedy, who was essentially a stranger to Boston, having left while still in grade school when his father located the family to New York.
