Vincent J. Celeste was a little-known East Boston attorney who was the Republican candidate running against JFK in both the 1950 Congressional election and the 1958 Senate campaign.
In the 1958 campaign he was widely considered to be the sacrificial lamb and did not even win the endorsement of the conservative Boston Herald, who backed Kennedy.
