After his posting to the Russell islands for the New Georgia campaign in May, 1943, Kennedy moved off the PT 109 and lived in a ramshackle old plantation house with some other officers. The house stood on stilts over Sunlight Channel that ran between Pavuvu and Banika islands. The house with it’s tin roof and broad front steps was decidedly more comfortable than the boat. Next to the house was a lime tree that the officers used to make fresh lime juice. Behind that was a urinal shaped like Tojo’s grave with a headstone that functioned as a “backsplash.”
