Howard Baird was often the captain of the Caroline, the private plane of JFK. He was at the controls for the last flight of Kennedy from West Palm Beach to Washington, D. C before the inauguration.
Baird continued flying Kennedy family planes after JFK was killed. Most famously, on April 9, 1964 he declined to fly Ted Kennedy to western Massachusetts because he deemed the heavy fog conditions were unsafe. Ted hired another charter and pilot, who crashed into a try on landing in zero visibility conditions, killing the pilot and one other aboard. Ted was seriously injured and bedridden for months.
